Bari Karol Wojtyła Airport is the main air gateway to central and northern Puglia, and one of its biggest advantages is that you do not have to begin the trip with a complicated transfer. The airport has a direct rail connection with Bari, while taxis, buses and rental cars cover the situations in which the train is not the best fit.
The right choice depends less on price than on what happens after you land. If your hotel is in central Bari, the airport train is usually the simplest public-transport option. If you are collecting a rental car and driving directly to the Valle d’Itria, Gargano or a countryside masseria, entering Bari first may be unnecessary. If you are continuing by rail to Polignano a Mare, Monopoli, Brindisi or Lecce, Bari Centrale is the key interchange.
This guide explains each option and, more importantly, how to continue beyond Bari without turning the first travel day into a chain of poorly timed connections.
Bari Airport transfer options at a glance
For most visitors there are four realistic choices. The table is a decision tool rather than a fixed timetable: services and fares should always be rechecked for your travel date.
- Airport train: best for central Bari and onward rail travel.
- Local or airport bus: useful when the timetable fits or you prefer a road connection.
- Taxi/private transfer: best for door-to-door travel, late arrivals, families with substantial luggage or groups.
- Rental car: best when you are leaving Bari immediately for rural Puglia or a multi-stop road trip.
The airport train to Bari Centrale
The direct railway is the option that makes Bari Airport unusually easy by southern-Italian standards. Ferrotramviaria trains run from the airport station to its Bari Centrale terminal, adjacent to the main RFI/Trenitalia station. The airport stop is connected to the arrivals area by a covered pedestrian route, so there is no shuttle transfer between terminal and railway station.
Current Trenitalia information describes the airport journey as roughly a quarter of an hour and sells integrated journeys that combine Trenitalia Regionale with Ferrotramviaria. That matters if you are continuing beyond Bari: search the whole journey rather than automatically buying several unrelated tickets.
The two Bari Centrale station areas are next to each other but they are not the same set of platforms. Allow time to follow signs and move between them, especially with children or heavy suitcases. A connection that looks comfortable on a booking screen can feel much tighter when an aircraft arrives late and you still need to walk through the airport and station complex.
When the train is the best choice
Choose the train when you are sleeping in Murat, near Bari Centrale or in another central neighbourhood that is easy to reach on foot or by a short taxi ride. It also works well if Bari is simply the transfer point for a rail-friendly destination along the Adriatic.
For Polignano a Mare and Monopoli, the usual logic is airport train to Bari Centrale and then a Trenitalia regional train south. For Trani or Barletta, check whether the airport railway and your onward connection can be combined efficiently; the airport rail line itself also runs toward the Barletta direction on some services.
If you are staying in Bari Vecchia, remember that the final part of the journey may still require a walk or taxi. The old town is compact and largely pedestrian, so “direct train to Bari” does not necessarily mean “train to the hotel door”.
Bus options from Bari Airport
Road-based public transport can be useful when rail times do not fit, but do not assume that a bus is automatically faster or cheaper once luggage, traffic and the location of your accommodation are considered. Bari traffic is most relevant at commuter times and on busy summer weekends.
Check the airport and operator websites for the service operating on your date. Airport transport is one of the areas where old blog posts age badly: routes can change, stops can move and seasonal timetables can differ from winter service. If a bus is part of a flight connection, leave a buffer instead of planning around the last possible departure.
Taxi or private transfer
A taxi is often the sensible choice when two or more people would otherwise make several connections, when you arrive late, or when your accommodation is not close to a station. For a central Bari hotel, the value is convenience rather than sightseeing time saved.
A pre-booked private transfer becomes more interesting if the destination is outside Bari: a masseria, Alberobello, Matera, the Monopoli countryside or another address that would require train plus bus plus taxi. Ask for a total quoted price, meeting instructions, luggage allowance and child-seat availability before confirming.
Do not accept an unofficial ride offered inside the terminal. Use the official taxi area or a transfer you have booked with an identifiable operator.
Renting a car at Bari Airport
If your itinerary includes rural masserie, beaches away from town centres, the Gargano interior or repeated village stops, collecting the car at the airport can be the cleanest start. You avoid taking luggage into Bari only to return to the ring roads later.
However, do not rent a car simply because you have heard Puglia requires one. A trip based in Bari, Polignano a Mare, Monopoli and Lecce can work well by train. If you will spend your first two nights in Bari, it may be cheaper and easier to collect a car only when you leave the city.

How to continue from Bari Airport to popular destinations
Polignano a Mare and Monopoli: rail via Bari Centrale is usually the simplest car-free route. Both towns have stations within useful walking distance of their centres, although your accommodation may still require a taxi.
Alberobello and the Valle d’Itria: public transport is possible but involves a different network and can be slower than the map suggests. If you have several Valle d’Itria villages on the itinerary, a rental car often becomes more useful.
Lecce: connect through Bari Centrale to the main Adriatic railway. If Lecce is the first and principal destination, compare flights to Brindisi Airport as well; Brindisi is geographically much closer to Salento.
Gargano: a car gives the greatest flexibility once you leave the main rail corridor. Rail can take you toward Foggia and some coastal gateways, but the promontory’s forests, beaches and mountain roads are not arranged around one simple train line.
Matera: Bari is a common gateway even though Matera is in Basilicata. Public-transport routes use a different rail/bus system from Trenitalia, so treat the transfer as a separate journey and check the day’s timetable.
Arriving late at night or very early
Late flights are where a theoretically cheap transfer can stop being practical. Check the last usable connection after your scheduled landing time, then add a realistic allowance for taxiing, passport procedures if applicable, baggage reclaim and walking to the station or stop.
If the margin is small, either book a flexible transfer or spend the first night near Bari or in the city and begin the regional journey next morning. The same logic works for an early flight home: a final night in Bari can remove a stressful pre-dawn drive from southern Puglia.
Travelling with children, luggage or reduced mobility
The direct rail connection is attractive with children because it avoids loading bags into a bus, but the best solution still depends on the last kilometre. A family staying in a pedestrian old-town lane may prefer a taxi from the airport or from Bari Centrale simply to reduce luggage handling.
If you need step-free routing or assistance, contact the relevant rail operator in advance rather than assuming every transfer point works identically. For child seats in taxis or private transfers, request the correct size when booking instead of expecting one to be available spontaneously.
A sensible first-day strategy
After a morning arrival, central Bari can be a useful first stop: leave luggage, explore Bari Vecchia and the seafront, then continue the next day. After an afternoon or evening arrival, resist the temptation to force a two-hour onward journey simply because the accommodation is prepaid.
For a broader plan, compare this guide with How to Get to Puglia, Getting Around Puglia and Where to Stay in Bari. The cheapest airport transfer is not always the cheapest itinerary once an inconvenient hotel location, extra taxis or an unused rental-car day are included.
Mistakes to avoid
- Buying a separate airport ticket and onward ticket without leaving enough transfer time.
- Assuming Bari Centrale is one single set of platforms with no walking between operators.
- Renting a car for city days when it will remain parked.
- Using old screenshots of bus timetables instead of the current operator site.
- Planning the final train or bus after a flight with no backup option.
- Choosing Bari Airport for a Salento-only holiday without comparing Brindisi.
